Our Take
The Debut PRO B is Pro-Ject's 30th anniversary statement — a version of the Debut platform built with significantly upgraded internal components and the addition of balanced XLR outputs, which is rare at any price point and genuinely useful for those with balanced amplification. The Pick it PRO MC cartridge is a serious piece of equipment, not a filler.
The balanced output alone sets it apart from most competitors at its price. If your preamplifier or phono stage has balanced XLR inputs, the signal path improvement is audible — lower noise floor, better channel separation, more dynamic range. It's a feature that assumes a system around it, which is appropriate given the price.
Three speed support including 78 RPM makes it unusually versatile for an audiophile deck. If you have vintage shellac records in addition to modern vinyl, the Debut PRO B handles both without compromise.
Sound Quality
Through balanced outputs, the Debut PRO B is exceptional — one of the more revealing decks at its tier. The MC cartridge brings fast transient response, extended highs, and accurate tonal color. Images are stable and wide. The noise floor through balanced connections is very low. Through unbalanced RCA, it's still excellent — detailed, musical, and controlled. It's a significant step up from the Debut Carbon EVO, though the cost of the full chain (MC-capable phono stage, XLR cables) needs to be factored in. Best suited to any genre where resolution and low noise are priorities.
Setup and Ease of Use
MC cartridge requires an MC-capable phono stage — verify compatibility before purchasing. Balanced outputs require XLR cables and a balanced-input phono stage or preamp. Initial setup (counterweight, VTF, anti-skate) takes 20–25 minutes; using a stylus force gauge is strongly recommended with an MC cartridge. 78 RPM requires belt repositioning. The Pick it PRO cartridge should be given a 20–30 hour break-in period before critical evaluation.
