Our Take
The LP120XUSB earns its popularity by doing more than almost anything else at this tier: direct-drive motor, USB output for digitizing your records, built-in preamp, and 78 RPM support. If you want a single box that handles everything without additional purchases, this is the one to consider.
The AT-VM95E cartridge is a genuine performer — better than the AT91 found on cheaper Fluance decks, and it's upgradeable (any VM95 series stylus fits). Direct drive gives you rock-solid speed stability and instant start/stop, which also makes it practical for DJing or scratch practice.
Where it loses ground to purist decks is in the extra features themselves — all that electronics adds mass and potential interference. Audiophiles often prefer simpler belt-drive signal paths. But for a listener who wants features and performance in one package, the LP120XUSB makes a strong case.
Sound Quality
Direct drive delivers excellent speed consistency, which translates to tight, unwavering bass and stable imaging. The VM95E cartridge has good detail retrieval and handles dynamic passages cleanly. The built-in preamp is decent but not exceptional — bypassing it with an external phono stage yields a noticeable improvement. Overall, it sounds more neutral than warm, with good clarity across the frequency range. Great for rock, electronic, and hip-hop where rhythm and speed stability matter. Not as tonally expressive as a Rega Planar 1, but more accurate in timing.
Setup and Ease of Use
The built-in preamp makes initial setup very simple — connect to any powered speakers and play. USB setup requires installing software (included) or using your own audio recording application. The tonearm has a counterweight that should be balanced before first use, taking about five minutes. 78 RPM support requires the appropriate stylus, which is sold separately. The deck is larger and heavier than most at this tier — make sure you have adequate shelf space.
