Our Take
The LPW40WN is what happens when Audio-Technica applies their engineering to a furniture-grade aesthetic. The walnut finish is genuinely attractive — this is one of the better-looking decks at its price point and holds its own in a living room setup. The carbon fiber tonearm is an unusual touch at this tier and contributes to low resonance.
It ships with the VM95E cartridge (the same found in the LP120XUSB), which is a good performer. The built-in preamp makes it easy to connect. Manual operation means you cue the needle yourself and lift at the end — not a hardship, just worth knowing if you were expecting automatic.
Who it's for: someone who wants a deck that looks great and performs well, without the bulk of the LP120XUSB and without needing USB or DJ features. It's a confident mid-range pick that doesn't ask much of you beyond setting it up correctly.
Sound Quality
The LPW40WN has a slightly warmer presentation than the LP120XUSB, which suits its aesthetic. The carbon tonearm keeps resonance low, and the VM95E delivers good resolution for the tier. Highs are smooth, mids are full, bass is controlled. It's not as analytically neutral as a Rega Planar 1, but it's engaging and satisfying for extended listening. Works well with folk, indie, acoustic, and jazz — genres where tonal warmth is a feature rather than a flaw.
Setup and Ease of Use
Built-in preamp means straightforward connection to any powered speakers or receiver. Tonearm balancing takes about five minutes; the carbon arm is lightweight and requires careful counterweight calibration. Anti-skate should be set to match the tracking force. No USB means no digitizing. The walnut plinth does benefit from a stable, isolated surface — speaker vibration on the same shelf can introduce low-level noise.
