Our Take
U-Turn makes one thing: turntables, assembled by hand in Massachusetts. That focus shows. The Orbit Basic has a clarity of purpose that most mass-market competitors lack — it plays records cleanly, it's built to last, and every component choice was made in service of sound quality rather than spec sheets.
The Ortofon OM5E it ships with is a genuine audiophile-adjacent cartridge — a meaningful step above the styli found on budget decks. The gap between what you hear on an Orbit Basic and a comparably priced all-in-one is audible from the first record.
The catch: no built-in preamp. You'll need to budget for a phono stage before anything comes out of the speakers. That's not a burden for the right buyer, but it changes the total cost. If simplicity is the priority above all, the AT-LP60X makes more sense. If sound quality is the priority, the Orbit Basic is one of the best first decks available.
Sound Quality
The Orbit Basic punches above its price in sound quality — the combination of a well-damped plinth, clean belt drive, and quality Ortofon cartridge produces a sound that's more refined than you'd expect. Bass is controlled and defined; midrange has clarity without harshness; highs are extended without brightness. Compared to the AT-LP60X, the difference is clear: more detail, better imaging, a lower noise floor. The main constraint is the OM5E, which is excellent but not the Orbit's final form — an OM10 or OM20 stylus swap is a popular and effective upgrade.
Setup and Ease of Use
No built-in preamp — this is the main consideration before purchasing. You'll need a dedicated phono preamp (a simple one adds modest cost and connects inline) or a receiver with a phono input. Initial setup involves seating the platter, setting the counterweight, and configuring anti-skate — U-Turn's instructions are thorough and the process takes 10–15 minutes. Manual operation: place the needle, lift at the end of the side. The Orbit's upgrade path is strong: add a built-in preamp module (available from U-Turn), swap the stylus, add an acrylic platter.
